We are a high traffic household. There are no rooms in this house that aren’t used ALL the time so when I have a spot for something like a bookcase, I need it to work for us, but I want it to look good. I’ve pulled together some tips on how I style my bookshelf to not only look good, but provide lots of storage for things that get used often!

Mixing new, inexpensive and nicer “splurge” items is always my go-to tip. I love creating new looks around the house using a mix of things we have with new items. Going through the seasonal aisle in the home section at Target has always been one of my favorite ways to get inspiration for the house!

Bookshelf styling tips for high traffic areas. The boys actually love it too and will help me pick out new decorative accents now and then! We have a bit of an ocean theme going on with that awesome gold urchin, ceramic whale and glass rope ball.

The biggest issue I have when styling a bookshelf is that, for us, it has to be functional. We don’t have enough room to have it not be!

Bookshelf styling tips for high traffic areas. For this bookcase I’ve used lots of small boxes and containers holding things that get grabbed (and left out) often. Things from around the house like cigar boxes that my husband brings home for me, storage boxes that we’ve had forever and then some new boxes from Target are all perfect for holding things like games, charging cords, batteries, my craft supplies, video game parts that have no other home, etc.

Bookshelf styling tips for high traffic areas. I like putting magazines into the magazine files for a more cohesive (and less busy) look. Extra blankets and pillows are stored at the bottom for easy access but out of the way of the dogs when we’re not home.

Bookshelf styling tips for high traffic areas. Keeping everything packed up in boxes leaves room for a few fun decorative pieces and a bit of color with succulents. The kind that won’t die lol! The small succulents and tins were found in the Target Dollar Spot.
