I had been planning and dreaming of decorating my first house for as long as I can remember. I used to pull the ads out of the Sunday newspaper and look at all the home items for sale. The time of year when the dorm products came out was always my favorite, and Target has long been one of the first ones I grab for inspiration. One thing I didn’t think about was paying for everything all at once. It usually doesn’t happen. That’s how this challenge came about. I have this tv stand that I’m not crazy about the color. You know that piece that you found at a garage sale, is your roommate’s or a hand me down and isn’t just quite perfect? So how do you make a piece like that work for your style right now without overhauling it?
First of all, see what you already have that you can add to the room. A tv is often the central part of a room – especially for smaller spaces. This tv stand is perfectly good, just darker than I was hoping for so I searched for things I wanted to display that were light and airy. Then I went to Target with $100 (plus the Cartwheel app and 5% off from my RedCard) and picked up some new gallery frames, shelves, wall storage (for texture and function), a couple baskets, as well as a super fun new light up arrow.
Before this space was dark and dull, now it has personality and the gallery wall ended up really highlighting the vaulted ceilings (which I LOVE).
To me, the best part about a gallery wall is the ability to change out the photos and art as your style or even the season changes. It’s such a fun, inexpensive way to update your space and you can do it often!
What was your first place like? Did you find out the hard way, like I did, that you can’t get everything all at once?
