I posted my “tween” son’s room reveal at All for the Boys a few months ago and now I’m finally getting around to posting some more information on the headboard we made for him.

I wanted a rustic but not country looking headboard. I told my husband what I wanted and had him pick me up some pallets.

First of all let me tell you a secret. Taking apart a pallet is NOT in any way easy. It requires the 3 P’s – pulling, proding and patience. I mean A LOT especially if the pallets aren’t new and have seen the elements. They definitely were not made with the intention of taking them apart. I have no tips here just have a crow bar, a hammer, some (or a lot of) muscle and sweat. Have fun with that.

You’ll want pallets that aren’t treated with chemicals. We knew were these came from so knew they were ok. Basically we yanked apart what we could and then cut pieces and layed out in the size that we wanted.

Once the whole thing was layed out we simply nailed the pieces to scrap wood we had from other projects. Since this was supposed to look rustic it didn’t really matter how many nails or where they went.

This is the back where you can see we felt we needed a little more security at some pieces (since the boards weren’t cut evenly. The metal piece is sort of a french cleat made for hanging heavy objects 300-500 lbs (depending on which one you get) called the Hangman. I chose this to make sure the headboard wasn’t going to clank against the wall and give it some more support on the wall. If you do use this I recommend using your own level just to make sure if this is going to hold the majority of the weight.

ESPECIALLY with kids you’ll want to make sure you have something to attach the headboard to the bedframe and continue to the floor to distribute the weight a bit more. One good jump on the bed and slamming against this it could come right off if it’s all that’s holding the headboard up.

Basically, we totally winged it but I love the way it looks 😉

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I’ll try to help you out. I just wanted to give more of a visual of the headboard for those that wanted one!
