Did you know that August is Washington Wine Month? What better reason to celebrate than with a fun DIY?!

Washington state actually has more than 900 wineries and 350 vineyards and is the home of the Charles Smith Wine Collection. If you’re not familiar, Charles Smith is a former rock band manager who debuted his first wine in 2001 and is already a two time winemaker of the year AND the only person to have won Winemaker of the Year by BOTH Food & Wine and Wine Enthusiast! I notice his wines everywhere because they have totally unique but eye catching black and white wine labels.

I picked up some Kung Fu Girl Riesling and The Velvet Devil Merlot while I was getting supplies for a bar sign I’ve been saying I was going to make forever. I got Jared a bar cabinet and have been slacking on the decor around it.

I wanted a “BAR” sign but couldn’t really find one that fit the vibe I was going for so decided to make my own.

HOW TO MAKE A MOSSY BAR SIGN

To make the sign you’ll just need paper mache craft letters, a craft knife, moss, paint and spray adhesive.

Trim out just the top of the letters. These had some extra cardboard inside that just came right out.

Then, paint the letters with a metallic paint. Don’t miss those front edges!

Once dry, add in moss using spray adhesive to adhere. There is no real technique here so just go with the flow until you feel like it’s secure. I didn’t really use much at all because the letters aren’t being moved around. Maybe even open that bottle of The Velvet Devil Merlot while you wait!

Or while you clean up.

KUNG FU GIRL RIESLING & THE VELVET DEVIL MERLOT

Whenever I’m visiting friends and they ask if I want some wine I always respond “Sure, whatever’s open”. I love to put a couple bottles out to make it easy when offering wine. We aren’t big “saving this bottle for a special occasion” type of people so anything we have is offered to friends, but generally they like when we limit the choices to make it easy.

Kung Fu Girl Riesling was inspired by Charles’ personal love of Riesling, but he felt that German Rieslings were intimidating because the labels are so hard to understand. The Ghost Fighter on the label hints that this wine will go great with sushi and Asian food. Kung Fu Girl Riesling is a medium-bodied, mouthwatering semi-dry white wine that has focused flavors of citrus blossom, lime leaf, and white peach that intermingle with mineral notes. It’s 100% Riesling that gets consistent 90+ points scores, and named Top 100 Wines by Wine Spectator!

The Velvet Devil was inspired by Charles’ desire to make merlot “sexy” again which is why he used the terms “velvet” (smooth) and “devil” (sexy). This one is a full-bodied, juicy, dry red wine, bursting with flavors of cherry and blackberry, brimming with cedar, pipe tobacco, and earth. It’s 94% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Franc and has won Wine Enthusiast Best Buy 3 years in a row for a good reason. It’s GOOD and one of my all around top picks.
