Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Invisalign to help spread the word about second opinions – a topic I feel very strongly about and wanted to talk about. All opinions are my own.

Oh this boy

This boy and his teeth! We’ve been seeing the dentist for all kinds of things since he was 2. Now we’ve ventured into the world of Orthodontists! Just a few weeks ago he had 4 teeth pulled to make some space in his very crowded mouth for some adult teeth to have a chance at coming in a bit better position. He did AWESOME! I attribute this to one thing as a mom that I’ve always done and always said I would do:

GET A SECOND OPINION

I can’t say it enough. I am always amazed at how many people don’t do this.

In a recent poll, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Invisalign it was found that Americans are more likely to seek second opinion for a major car repair than for a medical procedure or straightening their teeth.

The first pediatric dentist we saw (who was recommended by a lot of people) did not want to work with us at all about how we dealt with his dental work. Knowing my kid and how this was going to play out that was NOT going to fly with me. As soon as I had that little hint of unease we decided to get a second (and third) opinion and I’m SO glad we did. This entire experience would have been so much different if I hadn’t gotten a second (and third) opinion way back then and even now.

Fast forward to today he had his first spacers put in to begin the process of straightening his teeth (he’s getting a space maintainer put in for now). He’s not ready for the actual straightening part yet (his teeth come in very late) but we’re working on making room and really just starting the process. One thing I knew I wanted information on while we are in the beginning stages is the possibility of using Invisalign for his teeth straightening.

I didn’t know much about it but I learned that I had a lot of wrong information. Especially the fact that Invisalign can effectively correct a broad range of more complex cases such as: overly crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, open bite, crossbite, overbite and underbite. So we will definitely be considering it (and getting a couple opinions) when the time comes to start the teeth straightening work on his teeth.

So do you get second opinions on healthcare and/or dental work? Have you ever regretted not getting a second opinion?

To help bring awareness to the importance of a second opinion, Invisalign is giving away $50 a day in instant win prizes through Oct. 15 plus a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize in their Second Opinion Sweepstakes and Instant Win.
