I really love the Culture Passes at our local library! You can get 2 free admissions to many valley museums. This week my boys chose the Phoenix Art Museum. We had been (and left shortly after) on a First Friday so we wanted to go back when it was less busy!
We had a great time, aside from one employee making my 10 year old feel bad that he was standing too close (not touching or anything) to a mirrored floor display. She asked him to move back after hovering over him for a while but he felt like he got in trouble and felt guilty. Poor guy!
They love art and are finally to an age where it’s not hard to behave appropriately in a museum where you can’t touch much. It’s such a beautiful facility and most all the other employees made the boys feel welcome and told us some interesting facts here and there.
My boys are 8 and 10 and it’s a great age for the museum I think! Some tips to talk to your kids about before you go
- Prepare them to look and not touch (and not get too close) to most things
- Talk about how old some of the art is and why it’s important to not touch
- Have them look at all the types of art and decide their favorite
- Be prepared for them to look longer than you thought (I may have gotten a little bored waiting for them to look at their favorites 😉
